From Taylor's Falls, MN, he enlisted in Company B, 6th Wisconsin Infantry on 25 June 1861. Detached to Battery B, 4th US Artillery on 21 December 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The remainder of the War:
Discharged for disability on 31 March 1863.
