Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Trimbelle, he enlisted in Company B, 6th Wisconsin Infantry on 10 May 1861, and was appointed Corporal.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was wounded and captured in action at the Wilderness, VA in 1864. His leg was amputated, and he was discharged for wounds on 22 May 1865.
