Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Prescott, he enlisted in Company B, 6th Wisconsin Infantry on 10 May 1861, and was promoted to Corporal, Sergeant, and First Sergeant of his Company.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Wounded again in action in the Wilderness, VA in 1864.
