Before the Antietam Campaign: From Durand, he enlisted in Company B, 6th Wisconsin Infantry on 16 July 1861. In the Antietam Campaign: He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862. The remainder of the War: He was discharged on 5 December 1862 on disability, but re-enlisted in the Company on 2 January 1864. Transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps on 23 February 1865.
