Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Prairie du Chien, he enlisted in Company C, 6th Wisconsin Infantry on 30 April 1861. Promoted Corporal, Sergeant, and then First Sergeant of his Company.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Wounded again on 25 July 1864 and 1 April 1865. Appointed Captain to date from 20 July 1864. His right leg was amputated. Honored by brevet to Major of Volunteers on 1 April 1865, and mustered out 4 August 1865.
