Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was a 21 year old carpenter in Milwaukee when he enlisted in Company D, 6th Wisconsin Infantry on 10 May 1861, and promoted to Corporal and Sergeant.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on South Mountain on 14 September and at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Promoted to First Lieutenant 14 June 1864 and Captain on 19 October 1864. Wounded again at Petersburg, VA in 1864 and mortally at Hatcher's Run on about 7 February 1865. Died of wounds in the City Point Hospital on 15 February 1865.
