Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Milwaukee, he enlisted in Company H, 6th Wisconsin Infantry on 15 July 1861. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant, Company D on 23 October 1861 and to First Lieutenant on 16 July 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was appointed Captain on 13 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He resigned on 12 June 1863.
