Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Milwaukee, he enlisted in Company E, 6th Wisconsin Infantry on 10 May 1861. Promoted to Corporal and First Sergeant. Appointed 2nd Lieutenant on 16 July 1862 and First Lieutenant on 6 August.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was killed in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.
