Before the Antietam Campaign: From Milwaukee, he enlisted in Company F, 6th Wisconsin Infantry on 10 May 1861. Promoted to Corporal. Offered but declined commission as 2nd Lieutenant on 6 August 1862. In the Antietam Campaign: He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.
