Before the Antietam Campaign: He graduated from the USMA in 1835, resigned from the US Army in 1850, and became a college president. In May 1861 he was appointed Inspector General of the State of New York, and in March 1862 appointed BGen. of Volunteers commanding the 2nd Brigade/ 3rd Division/I Corps in the defenses of Washington. He commanded the 3rd Brigade/1st Division/ III Corps at Second Bull Run and Chantilly. In the Antietam Campaign: He led the 3rd Brigade/First Division of the First (I) Corps. The remainder of the War: He was made Provost Marshal of the Army of the Potomac and later all armies operating against Richmond. Later he commanded the District of Henrico (Richmond). After the War: Post War Career: Governor of soldiers' home. | |
