Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Fountain City, he enlisted in Company H, 6th Wisconsin Infantry on 10 May 1861. He was promoted to Corporal, Sergeant, then First Sergeant.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action in September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Appointed 2nd Lieutenant on 10 March 1863. Wounded again, in action at Gettysburg, PA in July 1863. Discharged 7 September 1864.

After the War:
He was a surveyor in Trempealeau County, Wisconsin until at least 1880.
