Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Dane County, he enlisted in Company H, 6th Wisconsin Infantry on 15 July 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Discharged 12 June 1863 for disability. He again enlisted, in Company H, 27th Wisconsin Infantry on 5 Jan 1864 and was discharged 29 August 1865.
