Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Glendale, he enlisted in Company I, 6th Wisconsin Infantry on 10 May 1861. Promoted to Corporal and Sergeant.

In the Antietam Campaign:
Detached for service with Battery B, 4th US Artillery from 22 September 1862 to February 1864.

The remainder of the War:
Wounded in action in the Wilderness, VA (May 1864). Appointed 2nd Lieutenant, Company H, 48th Wisconsin Infantry on 24 February 1865.
