Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Trimbelle, he enlisted in Company B, 6th Wisconsin Infantry on 6 June 1861 as a Private. He was detailed to Battery B, 4th U.S. Artillery on 1 December 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Discharged on 25 October 1862 for disability.
