He enlisted in Company F, 23rd New York Infantry on 6 May 18661 at age 20.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was detached for service with Battery B, 4th US Artillery and was with them when mortally wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He died of wounds.
