Before the Antietam Campaign:
Enlisted, Company M, 100th Pennsylvania on 5 September 1861 - made Sergeant.

The remainder of the War:
He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at Ft Stedman, Petersburg, Va (25 March 1865). He was promoted to 1st Sergeant 8 April 1865 (cited by Brevet to Captain 13 March 1865), and to 1st Lieutenant 12 May 1865. He mustered out with his company 24 July 1865.
