Newton B Lord
Raised in Jefferson County, the Companies of the Regiment were organized at Elmira in June 1861, and mustered intoo Federal Service for 2 years on July 10th. Officers elected were William C. Brown, Colonel, Stephen L. Potter Lieutenant Colonel, and Newton B. Lord Major.
They served their first year in active service in building and manning defenses of Washington DC. They were first in action on the Second Manassas campaign in late August 1862 . They were significantly engaged at Manassas.
On the Antietam Campaign
The 35th were deployed as skirmishers at Turner's Gap on South Mountain, September 14th, and were not strongly engaged.
With the rest of the Brigade they advanced along the West side of the Hagerstown Pike early on the 17th in close support of BGen Gibbon's 4th 'Black Hat' Brigade. They were in heavy combat near the Dunkard Church.

After the Antietam Campaign
The Regiment was also in action at Fredericksburg (VA) in December 1862, but had light duty after that until mustering out of service at the expiration of their two-year term in June 1863.
