Unit history

The Regiment was organized in June 1861 under Colonel W. H. Wharton and Lt. Col. William P. Bailey. In October, four additional companies were recruited from neighboring counties of Maryland and Pennsylvania to more quickly bring the unit up to strength. Companies B, D and G from Philadelphia, and Company C from Elkton, Maryland.

The Regiment was on duty at Baltimore until June 1862, when they joined the Army of the Potomac (AoP) on the Penisula Campaign.

After the Antietam Campaign

They were on the campaigns of the AoP at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spottsylvania Courthouse, and to the trenches at Petersburg. They mustered out at the end of their 3-year term of service in July 1864. Reenlisting veterans and new recruits transferred to the 1st Delaware Infantry for the duration of the War.
