Federal Regiment

31st New York Infantry

Commanding Officer on the Antietam Campaign:
  LCol. Francis E. Pinto

This Regiment's Chain of Command:
Army - Army of the Potomac
  Corps - Sixth Army Corps
  Division - 1st Division, 6th Corps
  Brigade - 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 6th Corps

On the Antietam Campaign

Lieutenant Colonel Pinto of the 32nd New York Infantry was assigned temporary command of the regiment on 13 September 1862, in relief of Colonel Calvin E. Pratt, who had been discharged on 10 September to accept the commission of Brigadier General of Volunteers. Pinto led the 31st New York in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and probably remained in command at least through the Battle of Antietam on the 17th.

Scott Hartwig1 notes a newspaper clipping - from Washington, May 21 - puts Pratt in command of the 31st at Antietam; this seems unlikely, and I don't believe that's what the clipping said.
