History of the Unit:
The Regiment was formed in response to President Lincoln's initial call was for 75,000 troops in April 1862. On 27 April 1861 the 7th Ohio was formed at Camp Taylor, Cleveland, largely from men of northeastern Ohio, originally for three-month service. In mid-June most enlisted for a three-year term. Eramus B. Tyler was elected first Colonel, and William R. Creighton Lieutenant Colonel.

They served on operations in Western Virginia through January of 1862, and then the Shenandoah Valley - seeing action in the Battles of Kernstown and Port Republic. Colonel Creighton was made Colonel of the regiment in May 1862 on the promotion of BGen Tyler.

In the Antietam Campaign:
Colonel Creighton was seriously wounded at Cedar Mountain on 9 August 1862, and Major Crane took command of the regiment. During the battle of Antietam, Major Crane assumed command of the Brigade from Colonel Tyndale, and Captain Frederick A. Seymour, Company G, was left in charge of the Regiment.

The remainder of the War:
The regiment served at Chancellorsville (May 1863) and Gettysburg (July) before transferring West. There they were at Lookout Mountain and on the Atlanta Campaign of 1863 and 1864. On 11June 1864 men whose service was not expiring were transferred to the 5th Ohio Infantry, and the regiment was ordered to Cleveland to muster out of service.
