History of the Unit: This is probably Company I, First West Virginia Cavalry, organized for Federal service in October 1861 under Captain William A. West. On 22 May 1862 he was succeeded in command of the Company by Captain William B. Harrison. They mustered out at expiration of their term in July 18651.
