In the Antietam Campaign: The Regiment was engaged on South Mountain, adjacent to DH Hill's Division in defense of Turner's Gap on September 14th. After withdrawing from a firefight there in some confusion, their commander LCol Watkins was killed while re-forming his men. Major Hilton then assumed command, and fought the regiment for the remainder of the defense that evening. At Sharpsburg the Regiment spent the day in support of Boyce's (Macbeth Artillery) Battery and other Artillery posted on the ridge just east of the town. See Maj Hinton's official report.
