History of the Unit: Organized at Charleston, SC in November 1861. The Regiment fought at Malvern Hill and Second Manassas before embarking on the Maryland Campaign. They were severely damaged at Second Manassas: by the end of the battle (August 30, 1862), Col Benbow and Lt Col Roberts had been wounded. Major Whilden had been killed, and senior Captain Murden was wounded and captured. Command at that point devolved on Captain S.A. Durham of Company H.
