Before Sharpsburg

A minister from Cherokee County 1, he organized and was Captain of Company E of the 47th in April 1862. He was wounded at Cedar Run (Virginia) on 9 August 1862 2, but was (probably) with the Regiment at Sharpsburg by 17 September. His appointment as Major was dated 23 August 1862.3

On the Campaign

Major Campbell was (probably) in command of the Regiment as senior officer present after Colonel Jackson assumed command of the Brigade in relief of Colonel Warren on 17 September. Lieutenant Colonel Bulger was on furlough.

The rest of the War

He again commanded the Regiment at Gettysburg in July after Colonel Jackson and Lt. Colonel Bulger were wounded and captured, respectively.4 He was killed in action at or near Spotsylvania Courthouse on the Wilderness Campaign in May 1864.5
