He was commissioned Captain, Company E, 57th Virginia Infantry on 29 June 1861 at Rorrers, VA.

On the Campaign

He commanded the regiment at Sharpsburg as senior officer present.

The rest of the War

He was wounded by gunshot to the shoulder in action at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863 and promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 5 July. He was hospitalized in Danville, VA and returned to duty on 2 May 1864. He was surrendered at Appomattox Court House on 9 April 1865.
