He enrolled in Springfield at age 24 in Company K, 76th New York Infantry on 28 September 1861 and mustered as Captain on 14 October.
On the Campaign
He took over command of the 76th New York Infantry on September 14th when Colonel Wainwright moved up to command the Brigade. Captain Young and the Brigade were held in reserve north of the Poffenberger farm to protect Hooker's First Corps artillery.
The rest of the War
He was wounded at Gettysburg, PA on 1 July 1863 and promoted to Major to rank from 30 September 1863. He was captured in the Wilderness, VA on 5 May 1864 and paroled, date not given. He was discharged on 12 March 1865.
