Before Sharpsburg
He had 5 or 6 years of military experience before the war, (unit not names) first entered Confederate service in March 1861 as a Corporal in the 14th Mississippi (Militia?), and served with them at Pensacola, FL to about March 1862. He enrolled and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Company K, 2nd Mississippi Infantry Battalion on 1 May 1862.
On the Campaign
He was in action with his Company at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 and was probably in command of the Battalion as the senior officer still standing by the end of the battle.
The rest of the War
Twenty soldiers who fought under him at Sharpsburg signed a petition on his behalf soon after that battle, recommending him for promotion. Which he later got.
His Company (K) was converted to cavalry and attached as Company F to the 8th (Wade's) Confederate Cavalry (2d Regiment, Mississippi and Alabama Cavalry) in January 1863. He was injured by a fall from a horse in June 1863 and was sent to a hospital in Atlanta, GA.
He was appointed Captain of Cavalry, PACS, raised a Company in Mississippi, and mustered with them as Company K at the organization of the 6th Mississippi Cavalry in Columbus on 7 September 1863. He was acting Lieutenant Colonel of the regiment by February 1864 when he was recommended for promotion, and was appointed Major and Lieutenant Colonel on 6 June (to date from 23 May) 1864. He was promoted to Colonel sometime after Colonel Isham Harrison's death in action at Tupelo/Harrisburg, MS in July 1864. He was surrendered and signed a parole at Columbus, MS on 17 May 1865.
After the War
He moved to Grayson County, TX in 1868, and was in real estate there by 1880 and to at least 1900.
