Before Antietam

From Philadelphia, he was commissioned Captain of the "Hibernian Target Company" (Hibernia Fire Engine Target Company #1) - Company C, 2nd Pennsylvania Reserves on 27 May 1861.

On the Campaign

He commanded the Regiment as senior officer present on South Mountain on 14 September and at Antietam on 16 and 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was wounded in action at Gettysburg, PA in July 1863 and was captured at the Wilderness, VA on 5 May 1864 and held at Columbia, SC. He mustered out on 12 March 1865 and was honored by brevet to Major on 13 March.
