Before Antietam
Age 28, from Port Clinton, he enrolled on 22 April 1861 as Captain, Company C, 6th Pennsylvania Infantry. He mustered out with them on 27 July in Harrisburg and enrolled again, being commissioned Major of the 48th Pennsylvania Infantry on 1 October 1861. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 30 November.
On the Campaign
He commanded the regiment in Maryland.
The rest of the War
He was promoted to Colonel on 20 September 1862. He was honored by brevet to Brigadier General of Volunteers on 1 August 1864. He mustered out with the regiment at the end of their term of service on 11 October 1864.
After the War
He was in mining and railroad businesses, and became a Major General in the Pennsylvania National Guard.
