Before Antietam

In 1860 he was a 37 year old clerk in Philadelphia, PA. He was appointed Major of the 23rd Pennsylvania Infantry on 21 April 1862 for 3 month service, then re-mustered for 3 years on 2 August. He transferred along with 4 Companies of the 23rd and mustered into the 61st Pennsylvania Infantry as Lieutenant Colonel 6 March 1862. He was promoted to Colonel on 1 June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was in command of the regiment in Maryland.

The rest of the War

He was killed in action at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863.
