Before Antietam

He was a successful hardware importer and was in the NY National Guard before the War. He enrolled 3 May 1861, at New York City, and mustered in as Captain, Company G, Ninth New York Infantry on 1 May 1861, to serve two years. He was commissioned Major on 14 February 1862, and wounded in action on 19 April at Camden, NC.

On the Campaign

In temporary command of the 89th New York Infantry, probably due to a lack of field grade officers present in the 89th at Antietam, he was cited for excellent leadership in the combat on the Union Left on the afternoon of September 17th [Col. Fairchild's report].

The rest of the War

He mustered out of the 9th Infantry in May 1863 at the end of the term of service, and returned to New York City. Although not assigned a command there, he was seriously injured during the draft riots in the summer of 1863 - probably on the night of July 15 -16. He was briefly Colonel of the 17th New York Infantry, then in the Veteran Reserve Corps to May 1865.

After the War

He was honored by brevet to Brigadier General in May 1865. He was elected New York Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), the Union veterans organization, in 1874. He was present at the GAR 'encampment' in 1886 in San Francisco, and had been (National) Senior Vice Commander-in-Chief by that time.
