Age 25, he enlisted on 21 May 1861 in New York City and mustered as Sergeant in the 3rd Independent Battery, New York Light Artillery on 17 June. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant on 10 August 1861 and First Lieutenant on 1 September 1861. He was promoted to Captain when Captain Mott resigned on 21 July 1862.
On the Campaign
He commanded his battery in Maryland. They were not engaged at Antietam.
The rest of the War
He was dismissed from the service on 13 April 1863 for being absent without leave.
