Before Sharpsburg

A lawyer in Jacksonville, AL, he was a member of the Alabama House of Representatives from 1849 to 1850 and was a delegate to the Alabama constitutional (secession) convention of 1861. On 4 June 1861, by then age 40, he helped raise and was commissioned First Lieutenant of Company G, 10th Alabama Infantry. He was promoted to Captain on 22 February 1862. He was wounded in action near Richmond, VA on 27 June 1862, but was back with his Company by the end of August.

On the Campaign

He was senior officer present and commanded the regiment at Sharpsburg, where he was killed in action on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was originally buried "In the 1st field of Wm. Ruletts [Roulette's] along Lane" on the battlefield at Sharpsburg. Probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.
