Before Sharpsburg

He attended medical school in Georgia and was licensed to practice in Centre, AL in April 1857. In 1861, a physician in DeKalb County, he enrolled as First Lieutenant, Company E, 12th Alabama Infantry and was promoted to Captain in April 1862 when Captain Patterson was promoted (and resigned).

On the Campaign

He assumed command of the Regiment in action at Sharpsburg as next senior man after Captain Tucker was killed.

The rest of the War

He resigned his commission on 15 January 1863 and returned to his medical practice.

After the War

He graduated from the University of the City of New York Medical School - his father's alma mater - in 1875. In 1880 he was a physician Plano in Collin County, TX and by 1900 had a pharmacy in Comanche County.

His service from the State of Alabama1 and a sketch of the regiment in the SHSP.2 Personal details from the General Alumni Catalogue of New York University (1907) and family genealogists, at least one of whom has his middle name as Lowndes. His gravesite is on Findagrave.

He married Mary Elizabeth Cunningham (-1871) in July 1863 in DeKalb and they had two boys, the second died shortly after birth. He married again, Lucetta Susan Howard (1852-1883) in Plano in November 1879, and they had two children.

He's often seen as William L. or W.L. Maroney, and his father was Dr. William A. Maroney, but he seems to have used the alternate spelling of his surname.
