He moved to Jackson, MS in 1838 and had service in the Mexican War (1847-49). He was commissioned Captain of the Raymond Fencibles - Company A, 12th Mississippi Infantry in April 1861. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in May 1861 and was elected Colonel in April 1862 at the Army reorganization.

He commanded the regiment in Maryland.

He resigned in 1864, date not known.
After the War
He lived in Jackson, where served several terms as was Mayor, and was Sheriff of Hinds County.
