Before Sharpsburg

In the 1850 Census he was listed as a 24-year old doctor in Campbell County, Georgia. He married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Camp there in January 1852. He was elected Captain of Company A ("Campbell Guards"), 21st Georgia Infantry 6 June 1861. He was elected Major of the Regiment 27 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He was in command of the regiment on the Maryland Campaign until wounded in action on 17 September. He was relieved in command by Captain Nisbit, Company H.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel 18 April 1864, but killed in action at Winchester, Va. 19 September 1864.
