A 32 year old farmer in Rutherford County, he was commissioned First Lieutenant, Company I, 34th North Carolina Infantry on 25 October 1861. He was promoted to Captain on 18 April 1862 and to Lieutenant Colonel of the regiment on 3 September 1862.

On the Campaign

He was in command of the regiment at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He resigned his commission on 4 December 1862. He was listed as absent without leave in March 1863 and dropped from the rolls in April.
