Before Sharpsburg

After graduation from VMI he was a teacher and co-principal of the Danville (VA) Military Academy. He was appointed Colonel of the 38th Virginia Infantry on 12 June 1861. He was wounded in action at Seven Pines, commanded the Brigade at Malvern Hill, and was out sick in the late summer of 1862.

On the Campaign

He commanded his regiment in Maryland.

The rest of the War

He was killed in "Picket's Charge" at Gettysburg, PA, on 3 July 1863. He was buried anonymously on the battlefield, and reinterred in 1872 in the "Gettysburg Dead" section of Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond.
