Before Sharpsburg

A lawyer and politician before the War, he helped organize his company and mustered into service as Captain of the Jasper Volunteers - Company B of the 44th Georgia Infantry on 17 March 1862.

On the Campaign

He commanded the depleted Forty-Fourth at Sharpsburg as the senior officer present.

The rest of the War

He was wounded at Chancellorsville 4 May 1863, saw action at Gettysburg, and was promoted Major of the regiment in September 1863. He retired from field service in May 1864 for disability, and was assigned duty in Augusta to the end of the War.

After the War

He returned to his law practice in Monticello, Jasper County and again served in the state legislature (1882-83).
