Before Sharpsburg
In 1847 he joined the infantry company from Montgomery County in the First Virginia Regiment for service in the Mexican War (to August 1848).1 By 1860 he was a Pulaski County resident making his living as a carpenter.2
He enlisted in the outfit that became Company C of the 4th Virginia Infantry on 17 April 1861 and was elected First Lieutenant. He was elected Captain on 25 July, and Lieutenant Colonel of the Regiment on 22 April 1862.3

He was seriously wounded in the jaw at Fredericksburg on 13 December 1862 and returned home to recover. He resigned from field service because of disability and took the post as Commander of the depot at Dublin, Virginia, in April 1864.3
