Pre-War he was a house painter. He was a militia officer and served in the Mexican war. In April 1861 he was appointed Colonel of the 6th Pennsylvania Volunteers, served in the Shenandoah under Patterson. He later recruited the 48th Pennsylvania Regiment and was its Colonel in October 1861. He commanded the 1st Brigade/2nd Division/IX Corps at Groveton, and in September 1862 was appointed BGen. of Volunteers (to expire March 1863).

He led the 1st Brigade/Second Division of Cox's Ninth (IX) Corps.
The rest of the War
He also led the Brigade at Fredericksburg, and in March 1863 was reappointed BGen. He served in Kentucky, but resigned due to ill health in May 1863. Afterwards he organised militia during the Gettysburg campaign and Early's raid. He mustered out in November 1864.
