Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted in the 12th US Infantry, Company "A" (or "H"), from Lancaster, Ohio. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for carrying an urgent message to stop "friendly" artillery fire at Cedar Mountain, 9 August 1862, while wounded.

In the Antietam Campaign:
It is not clear whether he had rejoined his Battalion by Antietam.
