He was an unmarried 17 year old student from Florence, AL when he enlisted as Private on 20 September 1861 in Company H, 4th Alabama Infantry at Camp Law, VA. He was present at most engagements from First to Second Manassas, VA. He was appointed 4th Corporal on 1 September 1862.

On the Campaign

Present in action at Boonsboro and Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

In action from Fredericksburg, VA in December 1862 through to the siege of Petersburg, VA in 1864, having been promoted to 3rd Corporal 3 July 1863, 2nd Corporal on 25 October, and First Corporal on 6 February 1864.
