Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 16 year old student living on his parent's farm at Sandy Ridge in Henry County, GA. He enlisted as a Private in Company C, 13th Georgia Infantry on 8 July 1861 in Griffin, GA.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was furloughed home from 18 October to 19 December 1862. He was captured near Gettysburg, PA on 5 July 1863, paroled at Fort Mc Henry in Baltimore, and sent on to Fort Delaware on 9 July. He was transferred to Point Lookout, MD on 22 October 1863 and held there to 18 February 1865, when he was sent to James River, VA and exchanged on 20 or 21 February 1865.
