Unit history

The 104th Regiment resulted from the consolidation of the Morgan Guards and Geneseo Regiment: "the ten companies of the latter forming seven, and the five companies of the former, three, H, I and K, of the new organization." They mustered into Federal service between September 1861 and March 1862.1

Initially assigned to the defenses of Washington, they were first in combat at Cedar Mountain, then fought at 2nd Bull Run in August 1862.

On the Antietam Campaign

The unit was at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September, and was part of the ferocious combat in Miller's Cornfield early in the morning of 17 September at Sharpsburg.
