History of the Unit: Formed from all over the state in July 1861, at Harrisburg. They first saw action at Dranesville, Va, in December 1861. They were then in action with McClellan on the Peninsula Campaign, Spring 1862, and at 2nd Bull Run under Pope in August. In the Antietam Campaign: They saw action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September, and in and near Miller's Cornfield on the morning of the 17th. The remainder of the War: They were at Fredericksburg in December, and on duty at Washington DC as Provost Guard for some time thereafter. They next saw action at Gettysburg in July. They continued on campaign with the Army of the Potomac into 1864 seeing combat at Bristoe Station, Mine Run, and on the Wilderness Campaign.
