In the Antietam Campaign: The Regiment crossed into Maryland on 6 September 1862 with around 150 present for duty. They had suffered devastating losses at 2nd Manassas in killed, wounded and captured. Among the casualties were the field officers: Colonel D.A. Weisiger was seriously wounded (not to return til Fall 1863) and Major John A May was killed "shot through the brain". Lieutenant Colonel Taylor was ill, though he accompanied the Regiment to Crampton's Gap. He was mortally wounded there on 14 September. In Maryland, Captains Richard Jones and Everard M Feild commanded until the return of senior Captain John R Llewellyn on or about the 13th. Llewllen had been slightly wounded at Manassas, and was seriously wounded at the head of the Regiment at Crampton's. He was relieved by Captain Richard W Jones, "afterwards Major, who commanded it at Sharpsburg and in many of the engagements in the last year of the War."
