History of the Unit: "The 46th NC Infantry was organized in March 1862, near Raleigh at camp Mangum. The recruits came from Burke, Catawba, Granville, Moore, Randolph, Richmond, Robeson, Rowan and Sampson counties. It was active with the ANV from Seven Days to Fredericksburg. It was stationed in Pacataligo, SC until June 1863. The 46th returned to Virginia and participated in Bristoe, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Cold Harbor. The 46th served throughout Petersburg and surrendered at Appomattox with 15 officers and 102 men." (from Crute) In the Antietam Campaign: Part of Walker's Brigade (Col. Manning), the regiment saw severe combat in and near the West Woods on the morning of 17 September. Their commander, Colonel Hall, became Brigade commander after Col Manning was wounded in action. Lt Col Jenkins then took command of the regiment. References, Sources, and other Notes: Source - Crute, Joseph H.
