D. Zable

Confederate (CSV)

Lieutenant Colonel

David Zable

(1832 - 1908)

Home State: Louisiana

Command Billet: Commanding Regiment

Branch of Service: Infantry

Unit: 14th Louisiana Infantry

Before Sharpsburg

Before the war he was a clerk in New Orleans1, and had sailed to California (for gold?) at age 18 in 18502. He was Captain, Company K as it was organized in June 1861, and was appointed Major of the Regiment in February 1862. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in August 1862, and succeeded Colonel Jones in command of the Regiment when that officer resigned.3

On the Campaign

It is likely, though not certain, that he was in command of the 14th at Sharpsburg and was probably wounded in the thigh there.

The rest of the War

He remained in command of the regiment for the remainder of the War, including in action at Gettysburg in July 1863. 4 He was promoted to Colonel in May 1864.3

After the War

He was a businessman and active as a Veteran.1
