Before Sharpsburg
He was a 22 year old clerk in New Orleans - where he had been a resident since childhood - when he enlisted in the 3rd Company, Washington Artillery on 26 May 1861 as First Sergeant.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He returned to the battery on 5 January 1863. He was captured in action at Fredericksburg, VA on 3 May 1863 and held at Ft. Delaware. He was exchanged through City Point, VA on 23 May 1863. He was absent sick in June 1863, but afterward present with his unit to at least February 1865.
After the War
He was a farm laborer in Lawsons, Somerset County, MD in the 1900 Federal Census.
